OUR  APPROACH

Here at Los Niños we are giving children a real jump start toward a working familiarity with literacy, mathematics, thinking skills and cognitive confidence. We are focused on the importance of developmental readiness...that moment in a young child's life when real learning will take place. This awareness, contributes to a child-centered nursery school, i.e., decisions about curriculum, its presentation, and program scheduling are made with the child in mind.

We focus on FOSTERING THINKING  &  PROBLEM SOLVING skills .

Over the years we have found that all of the purchased and packaged curriculums available do not fit our needs or our philosophy. We create our own curriculum, drawing upon the great educators: Jean Piaget, Jacques Cuisenaire, John Dewey, Maria Montessori, Erik Erikson and many mentors in particular, Besse Bolton, Mary Lane, Doreen Croft and Dot Hills.

We promote COGNITIVE & EMOTIONAL CONFIDENCE.

Worksheets on the subjects of Spatial Relationships, Patterning/ Sequencing, Random Logical Relations, Deductive Reasoning and many other critical cognitive skills stretch the children intellectually.  These tasks highlight the use and application of symbols (letters and numbers), not just the parroting of them, to represent their thinking and problem solving.

We use PLAY to create an ENVIRONMENT OF LEARNING.

Los Niños offers a natural setting for creative exploration. We encourage self-directed play by offering a range of choices. Indoor activities include teacher led art projects, free art, play dough, legos, building blocks, dress up, reading, climbing our indoor castle, musical instruments, role play, puzzles, games, and cognitive worksheets. Outdoor activities include playing and exploring our playground, riding bikes, playing ball games, tending to our garden, helping Tom with repairs, and going on field trips along the coast and to local farms.

We end each session with MUSIC.

Students are taught the importance of working together to clean up the play spaces and gather for snacks. We end each session in a circle for music time. This is a special part of the day for the children to share their plans for the weekend, join in sing-a-longs, practice speaking in front of an audience, and dance together as a group. Music time is a treasured Los Niños tradition.
